Tax billing & collection

Office of the County Collector

The Collector bills and collects property taxes and distributes what it collects. Pay by October 15. The Collector’s office does not set property values and cannot change an assessment — to question a value, see the County Assessor.

What this office does

Statements, payments & distribution

The Collector’s office bills and collects property taxes and distributes what it collects to the schools, cities, and county funds entitled to it. It is a separate elected office from the Assessor’s, with separate records and separate duties.

Statements & payments

Statements are mailed once the books open in March, and payment is due by October 15. Pay by mail, at the counter, or by phone at (501) 676-6344; current-year taxes can be split into installments at no charge.

Payment deadlines

Penalties & delinquent taxes

After October 15 a 10% penalty attaches, and parcels that remain unpaid are certified to the state. The Collector’s office can arrange installment payments at any time before the deadline.

What happens if taxes go unpaid

Distribution of collections

What this office collects is distributed to local school districts, county government, and city services. The Collector distributes it and the Treasurer accounts for it. No portion of it goes to the state.

Where the money goes

Mark the calendar

The billing year

Arkansas property taxes are paid in arrears — the bill paid this fall is for the previous year’s assessment. These are the dates this office keeps.

  1. March

    Statements are mailed — Collector

The Collector opens the books on that assessment year and mails statements. If taxes are escrowed, the mortgage company receives the billing data as well.

  2. October 15

    Payment deadline — Collector

Pay in full, or have the final installment in, by close of business. Postmarks count. Penalties begin October 16.

  3. October 16

    Penalties attach — Collector

A 10% penalty plus interest attaches. Real estate that remains delinquent is certified to the Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands and may eventually be sold at auction.

Questioning a value or assessing property?

The Collector's office does not set property values and cannot change an assessment. Assessment, property values, and the homestead credit are handled by the County Assessor at (501) 676-6938.

Your statement

How the bill is figured & where it goes

The Collector bills what the assessment rolls and the levied millage produce. The value on the statement comes from the Assessor; the millage is levied by the school district, county, and city.

How the bill is figured

Tax = 20% of appraised value (the "assessed value") × the millage levied by the school district, county, and city. Millage varies by location, so the figure below is an illustration only: a $150,000 home at 40 mills is $150,000 × .20 × .040 = $1,200, before the homestead credit. For the millage on a specific parcel, check the statement or call the Collector.

Where it goes

Property-tax revenue is distributed to local school districts, county government, and city services. The Collector distributes it and the Treasurer accounts for it. No portion of it goes to the state.

The homestead credit is applied against this bill, and it is registered with the Assessor. Homestead credit & Amendment 79 protections.

Common questions

Billing and payment questions

Call the Assessor at (501) 676-6938 to assess property, to question how a property was valued, or to register the homestead credit or the assessment freeze. Call the Collector at (501) 676-6344 about a statement, a payment, an installment plan, a receipt, or delinquent taxes. If you reach the wrong office, staff will direct you — but the two offices keep separate records, and only the Assessor can change a value.

A 10% penalty plus interest attaches on October 16. Real estate that remains delinquent is certified to the Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands and may eventually be sold at auction. The Collector's office can arrange installment payments at any time before the deadline.

Yes, two things. Confirm with the Assessor that the homestead credit is registered on your parcel, and assess your vehicles by May 31 — an escrow account covers the real-estate bill, not personal property. The Collector settles the real-estate bill directly with your lender.

Personal property is taxed for the full year based on what you owned when you assessed it. If you sell in June, you still owe that year's tax on it, but you will not assess it again the following January. Questions about what is on your assessment go to the Assessor; questions about the bill go to the Collector.

It can. Arkansas law provides property-tax relief for qualifying veterans and, in some cases, surviving spouses and dependents. What applies depends on your situation and documentation, so call the Collector at (501) 676-6344 and ask what you qualify for and what to bring. The county's Veterans Service Officers can also help with the paperwork.
